NIOS TMA stands for Tutor Marked Assignment. It is an academic assignment prepared by NIOS learners for their registered subjects and evaluated by an assigned tutor or study centre.
A Tutor Marked Assignment is a set of subject-based questions that learners answer as part of their NIOS studies. Its main purpose is to give students practice in writing answers and help them understand how well they have learned the subject.
After the assignment is evaluated, the tutor may provide marks, comments or academic feedback. This can help learners identify weak areas, improve answer-writing skills and prepare more effectively for the public examination.
TMA is not merely a formality. It is designed as a learning and feedback activity within the NIOS instructional system.
TMA connects self-study with academic guidance by allowing learners to practise, submit their work and receive evaluation.
Learners practise presenting complete, organised and relevant answers before appearing in the public examination.
Preparing answers encourages learners to revisit lessons, identify key concepts and understand topics more clearly.
Evaluation comments can help learners recognise mistakes and improve their academic performance.
Writing subject-based assignments helps learners develop confidence and prepare for descriptive examination questions.

Prepare answers using the relevant NIOS study material.
Follow the prescribed submission instructions.
The assignment is checked and marks or feedback are recorded.
NIOS learners study largely at their own pace. Tutor Marked Assignments provide a structured opportunity to practise written answers and receive academic feedback during this self-learning journey.
The TMA requirement depends mainly on the learner’s admission stream, registered subjects and previous submission status. Use this simple guide to understand which rule may apply to you.
NIOS has introduced online TMA submission for Stream 1 learners. Learners should download the assignment for their registered subject, prepare the answers and upload the completed TMA through the prescribed online facility within the notified schedule.
Stream 1 learners at the Secondary or Senior Secondary level are covered by the online TMA submission system.
A learner who has already submitted TMA but did not clear the public examination does not ordinarily need to submit the same TMA again.
When a learner fails a subject in the public examination and later appears in that subject through the On-Demand Examination System, the existing TMA marks are added according to NIOS rules.
The official online-submission notification identified in this guide specifically refers to Stream 1 learners. Students admitted through another stream should not assume that the same TMA rule applies.
Learners should use the TMA issued for the correct course level, academic session, subject name and subject code. A Class 10 assignment should not be used for Class 12, and an assignment for one subject cannot be uploaded in place of another subject.
Correct course level
Correct academic session
Correct subject name
Correct subject code
Check your admission record or learner dashboard.
Match the subject name, code and session.
Check whether TMA marks are already recorded.
Upload only when the official TMA facility applies.
The NIOS notification on online TMA submission states that offline TMA will not be accepted from Stream 1 learners, Accredited Institutions or Regional Centres. Use the official online process and retain proof of submission.
Transfer of Credit status alone does not confirm whether a fresh TMA is required. The learner should check TMA applicability for the NIOS subjects currently registered for study and examination. Marks transferred from the previous board and new NIOS subjects should not be treated as the same thing.

Tutor Marked Assignment marks form part of the assessment for applicable NIOS learners. Understanding the correct weightage helps students see why completing and submitting TMA carefully is important.
For applicable academic subjects, Tutor Marked Assignment carries 20% weightage of the theory component. The remaining theory assessment is based on the public examination according to the subject’s evaluation scheme.
In subjects that also include a practical examination, the final marks structure may include separate theory, practical and TMA components. Therefore, learners should always check the official subject scheme instead of assuming that every TMA is worth exactly 20 marks.
The expression “20% of theory” means that the assignment contribution is calculated with reference to the theory component of the subject. The numerical TMA marks can therefore depend on the subject’s maximum theory marks.
Check whether the subject has a practical component.
Check the maximum marks assigned to theory.
Use the official subject evaluation scheme.
Do not rely on one formula for every subject.
TMA marks are included in the applicable subject assessment according to the official evaluation scheme.
Learners can earn assessment credit through careful study, preparation and timely submission.
Writing answers for TMA helps learners practise before the public theory examination.
Previously recorded TMA marks may continue to be used when an eligible learner reappears in the relevant subject.
Its marks are connected with the applicable registered subject.
Submitting an assignment does not automatically guarantee full marks.
The uploaded TMA must match the learner’s subject name and code.
Learners should verify the submission and marks status through the official dashboard.
If an eligible learner has already submitted the TMA and later reappears in the examination for that subject, the previously recorded TMA marks may be carried forward according to NIOS rules. The learner should check that the marks are visible in the official record before relying on them.
Learners must also satisfy the applicable examination and certification requirements. TMA marks support the assessment, but they do not replace the required public examination components.

TMA submission dates are announced according to the learner’s admission block and public examination session. Check the applicable deadline carefully and complete the online upload before the portal closes.
An official NIOS Regional Centre update currently lists 31 August 2026 as the last date for uploading TMA. This update is relevant to the current Stream 1 Block 2 submission cycle connected with the September–October 2026 examination session.
Always follow the latest official notification rather than relying only on the date printed in an older assignment document.
The original official notification listed 31 July 2026 as the submission deadline without late fee for learners appearing in the September–October 2026 public examination.
A later update on an official NIOS Regional Centre website shows the TMA uploading deadline as 31 August 2026.
Learners admitted under Stream 1 Block 1 generally receive a separate TMA uploading schedule for the April–May examination cycle.

Save the acknowledgement before the window closes.
Uploading on the last day may be risky because of slow internet, incorrect file size, dashboard errors or heavy portal traffic. Prepare and submit the assignment early, then check that the confirmation is visible in your account.
NIOS may provide a separate online service for eligible learners after the normal uploading window. Availability, charges and eligibility must be checked directly on the official service page.
Even when NIOS extends the date, learners must complete the upload successfully and retain the acknowledgement. Merely preparing the assignment or opening the upload page does not count as submission.
The date displayed above is based on the latest official information available when this page was updated. The learner dashboard and the newest NIOS notification should always be treated as the final authority.
Small errors in subject selection, learner details, file preparation or online submission can create unnecessary problems. Review these common mistakes before uploading your Tutor Marked Assignment.
Always confirm the academic session, course level, subject code, learner details, page order and submission status before considering your assignment complete.
An assignment from a previous academic session may contain different questions or instructions.
Similar subject names can create confusion, especially when Class 10 and Class 12 subject codes are different.
Learners sometimes answer every alternative or choose a question different from the one required.
A lengthy answer is not useful when it does not directly address the question or relate to the correct lesson.
A wrong or incomplete enrollment number can make the assignment difficult to identify correctly.
A random cover page may omit details requested in the official TMA initial pages.
A learner may accidentally upload another subject, an incomplete draft or a file belonging to someone else.
Shadows, cropped text, upside-down pages or missing answers can make the digital assignment difficult to evaluate.
Even a correctly prepared file can create a problem when it is submitted under another subject option in the learner dashboard.
Internet problems, incorrect file size or heavy portal traffic can delay submission.
Selecting a file or seeing the progress bar does not necessarily mean that the assignment has been finally submitted.
Without acknowledgement or status proof, it may be difficult to confirm when and how the assignment was submitted.
The points above simplify common risks arising from official TMA requirements. The current assignment instructions, learner dashboard and latest NIOS notification always take priority over general guidance.
Keep your enrollment number, class, subject code and completed TMA file ready when requesting help.
